This book identifies the problems of substance abuse in the workplace and then discusses the dynamics of how these problems can be approached and solved.
Abstract
Part I discusses the significance of substance abuse and addresses the legal issues involved in countering substance abuse. The impact of substance abuse in the workplace is discussed at length, along with the legal framework surrounding it, including recent relevant U.S. Supreme Court decisions. Part II presents the guidelines for establishing substance abuse policies, procedures, and training. The book advises that substance abuse policies are critically important for any employer substance abuse program, since the legal quality of an employer drug program will determine whether it succeeds or fails. Drug testing is discussed from both a procedural and legal perspective. One chapter discusses the education and training of both managers and employees regarding an employer's drug policy. Part III reviews the guidelines for establishing comprehensive substance abuse programs. After a summary introduction, the various types of substance abuse programs are described, including employee assistance programs, rehabilitation referral programs, inpatient rehabilitation programs, outpatient rehabilitation programs, and aftercare and long-term rehabilitation programs. The appendix serves as a working tool for practitioners. 500-item bibliography, table of cases, and subject index
