This study analyzes the role strain women experience when they work in a nontraditional role. It examines how corrections officers have to balance their sex role with their occupational role in order to minimize conflict while on the job.
Abstract
It is based on research conducted at five correctional institutions that house male inmates and employ women on the corrections staff. Questionnaires were given to female staff, male staff, and male inmates on issues related to the employment of women as corrections officers. These issues included job performance, relationship of female officers with male staff and inmates, and acceptance of women in the role of corrections officers. Oral interviews were also recorded. Quantitative data compiled from analysis of the responses to the questionnaires is summarized in a series of statistical tables. Excerpted quotations from the interviews are also included to provide a qualitative complement to the statistical data. Conclusions are drawn about women working in a nontraditional role such as corrections officer. A bibliography is provided. (Author abstract modified)
