This document describes and summarizes the 5-volume report of a study designed to formulate a general catalogue of procedures to assist Canadian municipal police forces to develop improved management information systems.
Abstract
The study intent was to develop management information system specifications that could guide future information systems development. The first volume examines present trends in policing for Canadian municipal police jurisdictions, projecting their implications to the need for management information systems in the future, and making recommendations on adjusting and preparing for the future. Volume II reviews the development of management information systems in the United States and includes recommendations for similar developments in Canada. Reporting on a survey of large Canadian municipal police forces, the third volume describes management information systems in Canada and specific initiatives of a number of individual police forces. Volume IV presents a conceptual framework for developing a management information system in a Canadian police jurisdiction and provides a catalogue of procedures. The final volume discusses technical design qualities of the management information system framework and describes each component in terms of inputs, outputs, and file interactions. A selected bibliography is included.
