This Problem-Specific Guide from the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services, U.S. Department of Justice, summarizes knowledge about the problem of street robbery.
Abstract
The Problem-Specific Guides from the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services contain information about how police can reduce the harm caused by specific crime and disorder problems, in this case, the problem of street robbery. For this guide, street robbery is defined as a crime with the following five characteristics: the offender targets a victim; the victim is a pedestrian and a stranger; the offender attempts or completes a theft of cash or property; the offender uses force or the threat of force against the victim; and the offense occurs in a public or semipublic place. The guide is divided into three main sections. The first section of the guide addresses the problem of street robbery and the harms caused by it, and discusses the factors contributing to its occurrence. The second section of the guide provides information to law enforcement officials to identify and understand the problem of street robbery in their jurisdiction. The third section of the guide provides general and specific responses to the problem of street robbery. Specific responses include offender-oriented responses, victim-oriented responses, location-oriented responses, and routine-oriented responses. Figures, tables, appendix, and references
