Through dramatization, explanation, and instruction, this video teaches children a four-step process designed to prevent them from being kidnapped by a stranger.
Abstract
Basketball legend Kareem Abdul Jabbar, explains the objective of the video, which is to help children develop personal-security techniques. The four-step personal security system profiled in the video consists of "avoid," "surprise," "stun," and "run." Step one, "avoid," involves using behavioral techniques designed to avoid contact with a potential predator. Suggestions include walking rapidly with shoulders back and head erect, observing one's surroundings; staying away from strangers; having a secret family code word so strangers cannot pretend to be a family friend; not taking unsafe shortcuts; not having personalized items; not talking on the phone to strangers; and never letting anyone know you are home alone. Step two, "surprise," involves taking affirmative measures, when approached, to prevent being harmed or taken into custody. Techniques are explained and demonstrated for protecting personal space (preventing a person from getting too close), assuming a defensive position, and speaking strongly and clearly. The third step, "stun," explains and demonstrates ways to distract or disable an attacker long enough to permit running to a safe place. The fourth step is to run away. The video suggests that a child be able to run a quarter mile without stopping.
