Abstract
General information on workplace violence addresses its prevalence, causes, prevention, perpetrators, targets, violent acts, victims, its effects, and responses to and recovery from workplace violence. The body of the book discusses these subjects in detail. Among the physical acts of violence discussed are arson, assault, harassment, homicide, forcible rape, robbery, and vandalism. Other violence considered consists of verbal violence, visual acts of violence, written acts of violence, and suicide. A review of the causes of violence in the workplace encompasses the causes of mental illness, motives that fuel violent behavior, and environmental causes. The latter encompass economic, political, societal, and job conditions, as well as management methods and organizational culture. Nine chapters focus on prevention. Topics discussed are strategic planning, workplace policies and procedures, the management of troubled employees, avoidance of work-induced violence-triggering events, risk management, security management, applicant screening that identifies violence-prone people, job performance, and information networking. Suggestions are offered for what to do should workplace violence occur, and guidelines are presented for the recovery from workplace violence. Glossary and subject index
