Great Britain's Crime and Disorder Act of 1998 requires local authorities and the police, as well as other key agencies and the community, to work together at the district level to develop and implement strategies for reducing crime and disorder in their areas.
Abstract
Having established a local partnership, one of the first requirements of the act is to conduct a thorough review of crime and disorder in an area in the form of a crime and disorder audit. Wide consultation on the audit's findings is required, and a strategy to tackle the issues raised must then be developed. The act specifically mandates Statutory Partnership Task Forces. These partnerships must publish details of the entire process, including ownership of specific targets and performance measures detailed in the strategy. Details are provided on partnerships at various sites, with emphasis on leadership and management styles, roles, and functions. The conduct of crime and disorder audits is discussed, and examples of partnership strategies are provided. Issues that must be considered in establishing statutory partnerships are identified as monitoring and evaluation, resources, implementation, county and district perspectives, information exchange, and links with other initiatives. Detailed findings on specific partnership sites are appended. Tables and figures
