During the first half of 1990, a total of 90 people were detained in Great Britain under the Prevention of Terrorism Act 1989; of these, 58 were detained during the second quarter.
Abstract
Forty-nine of the second-quarter detentions were in connection with Northern Irish terrorism and 9 were in connection with international terrorism. Seventy-two persons were also interrogated for more than 1 hour, but were not detained. Exclusion orders affected 16 people during the most recent four quarters, similar to the numbers of 1987 and 1988. At the end of the second quarter of 1990, 96 persons remained excluded, 8 fewer than a year before. Only 4 persons were deported, a contrast from 1984-87, when 49 were deported. During the past year, 14 of the 195 persons detained were charged with an offense. Detention periods were extended beyond 48 hours for 36 of these persons. Tables and list of other reports issued by the Home Office during the past year.
