Abstract
Former powers to make exclusion orders were not used in 1998 and have now lapsed. Eight of the 45 persons detained in 1998 were charged with offense, and extensions of detention were granted for 21 persons. Of persons detained in connection with international terrorism, 12 percent were charged and some were awaiting the outcome of deportation or extradition proceedings. A total of 600 persons were examined for more than 1 hour but were not detained, 38 were charged with an offense, and 81 were examined in connection with international terrorism. Just one person was examined for more than 12 hours in 1998, and this was for Northern Irish terrorism. 12 notes, 10 tables, and 2 figures
