This report presents statistics pertinent to the implementation of Great Britain's Prevention of Terrorism Act 1989 for the second quarter of 1992.
Abstract
Statistics address detentions, persons subject to an exclusion order or deportation order, persons charged with offenses following detention under the act, extensions and periods of detention, and periods of examination. Data indicate that 53 people were detained under the Prevention of Terrorism Act 1989 in the second quarter of 1992; 50 of the detentions were connected with Northern Irish terrorism, and three were in connection with international terrorism. Seventeen (32 percent) of those detained in the second quarter were either charged with an offense, deported, removed, or excluded. Of the 36 detentions in the second quarter not leading to a charge with an offense, deportation, removal, or exclusion, 34 (94 percent) were for a period under 48 hours; the proportion since the beginning of 1990 is 90 percent. Sixty-one persons were examined for more than 1 hour in the second quarter, but not detained; the quarterly average since the beginning of 1990 is 65. Two of those examined in the latest quarter were charged with an offense. 7 tables and 12 notes
