Abstract
On April 1, 1989 the code of offenses under which inmates can be charged was substantially changed and simplified. New offenses were defined to cover activities such as fighting, barricading, and arson while the offense of making a false and malicious allegation against a correctional staff member was abolished. During 1989 more than 81,000 offenses against prison discipline were punished, an increase of 1.5 percent over 1988. The most frequent offenses were disobedience or disrespect including abusive language and offenses against order and discipline. Punishments included forfeiture or remission and the elimination or reduction of earnings. Data tables
