Abstract
Black people composed 5.2 percent of the British population in 1991. One percent of the 125,429 police officers on December 31, 1991, were black. A total of 2 percent of the 23,698 lay magistrates were black as of January 1, 1987, and 5.5 percent of magistrates appointed in 1989 were black. None of the 76 stipendiary magistrates on August 1, 1992, were black; and none of the 263 justices' clerks and London equivalents on August 1, 1992, were black. Two percent of the solicitors holding practicing certificates on July 31, 1992 were black; and 10 percent of the 243 basic-grade crown prosecutors whose ethnic origin was known on May 18, 1992, were black. One percent of the 478 circuit judges were black as of August 1, 1992. As of August 1, 1992, all High Court judges, Lord Justices of Appeal, and Law Lords were white. Two percent of the 5,693 probation officers whose ethnic origin was known on December 31, 1987, were black. As of August 10, 1992, 70 of the 23,344 prison officers were black. The ethnic origin of approximately half of the officers was not known. 13 references
