Since 1983, State alcohol and drug agencies have voluntarily submitted fiscal, client, policy, and other service data on an annual basis to the National Association of State Alcohol and Drug Abuse Directors.
Abstract
Highlights of data from State alcohol and drug abuse profiles indicate expenditures for alcohol and other drug treatment and prevention services totaled nearly $3.7 billion in 1993. Of the total expenditures, States provided more than $1.4 billion, Federal sources nearly $1.4 billion, and county and local sources $276.8 million. About 76.4 percent of total funds were spent for treatment services, 14.7 percent for primary prevention services, and 8.9 percent for other activities. A total of 7,771 alcohol and other drug treatment units received funds administered by State alcohol and drug agencies. Of these units, 658 were alcohol units, 1,006 were other drug units, and 6,107 were combined alcohol/drug units. Alcohol and other drug client treatment admissions reported by 49 States, the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico totaled over 1.8 million. Cocaine was the leading drug of abuse, with 312,830 treatment admissions. States identified various needs to meet requirements of special populations, such as women, youth, children, dually diagnosed clients, criminal justice clients, HIV-infected persons, racial and ethnic minorities, the homeless, and the elderly.
