Abstract
Charts do not reflect information concerning those New Jersey cases paroled out of the State. Further, the figures presented represent only those submitted by the bureau's various components. On June 30, 1980, the bureau was responsible for the supervision of 8,620 cases in New Jersey and 108 cases in the central office special file. During the fiscal year 12,896 cases were actively supervised by the bureau while it continued to handle cases released at their maximum expiration date, referrals from other components of the criminal justice system, and various investigative responsibilities. Returns to institutions by new commitments and technical violatons during the year totaled 11.4 percent of the bureau's caseload. The court commitment/recommitment equaled 2.9 percent, while the technical violation rate equaled 8.5 percent of the total. The percentage of missing cases in relation to total caseload was 9.9 percent; parolees from the women's correctional institution had the largest percentage of missing cases. In the course of supervising the bureau's caseload, the bureau field staff made a total of 406,448 contacts. An additional 13,584 investigation contacts were made. A total of 95,317 hours or 50.9 percent of the officers' time was spent in the field. Although the bureau is now reliant solely on its own components for information to compile statistical data, manual data gathering techniques and personnel turnover contribute to the existing margin of error. Tables provide the bulk of the report. (Author abstract modified)
