This report presents the findings from the 2000 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse and addresses the problems associated with drug abuse.
Abstract
Data is presented about the demographic characteristics of substance abusers, patterns of substance use, treatment for drug addiction, perceptions of risk, criminal activities associated with substance abuse, and mental health problems. Findings are presented by State, with estimates of substance abuse within each State ranked and categorized into quintiles for simplicity sake. Chapters are divided by substances. For example, chapter two discusses the prevalence of illicit drug use including marijuana and cocaine. Findings indicate that North Dakota ranks among the lowest States for illicit drug use while Massachusetts experiences one of the highest levels of illicit drug use. Chapter three explores the prevalence of alcohol use while chapter four focuses on tobacco use. Massachusetts again ranked highest for alcohol use while West Virginia ranked highest for tobacco use. Chapter five presents findings specifically regarding dependence on or abuse of alcohol or illicit drugs. According to the data, an estimated 1.9 percent of the national population of persons aged 12 or older were dependent on or had abused illicit drugs in the year prior to the study. The findings of this report are presented in narrative, table, and graph format.
