British police control of public order, combined with the under-representation of women in the police forces of the United Kingdom, has resulted in insufficient attention to domestic violence and crime exploiting women.
Abstract
British civil liberties and democratic rights have been threatened by the legal widening of State police powers through the passage of such legislation as the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 and the Public Order Act 1986. Additionally, the male-dominated police system has failed to recruit and promote women into positions of importance. The result of these trends is a male-dominated and patriarchal system that is insensitive to the special interests of women citizens: policing those who exploit women through violence, prostitution, and pornography.
