The Laser Village Orange County -- funded by private donations, contributions, and user fees -- provides, in addition to the American Standards Course (firearms) and the Practical Pistol Course, situational firearms exercises using real people.
Abstract
Equipped with laser-fitted weapons and vest-type detectors that register a hit, coupled with Hollywood-type movie sets, officers are placed in true-to-life settings and situations that better prepare them to act effectively in similar, real-life circumstances. Given tight government budgets, the Laser Village was established through contributions and donations from local businesses and organizations. Inmate labor and donated construction materials were used in facility construction. Operations and facilities are maintained through user fees. The training program replicates urban settings likely to be encountered by officers in the field. Any of the structures can be adapted to handle a number of scenarios to test the officer's ability to think and act in a number of situations.
