Length

A total of 944 standards for law enforcement agencies are presented in 84 chapters and 9 topic areas.
Abstract
These areas cover law enforcement role and responsibilities, organization and management, personnel structure, personnel processes, law enforcement operations, operations support, traffic operations, prisoner and court-related activities, and auxiliary and technical services. Each standard is composed of three parts: the standard statement, commentary, and levels of compliance. A majority of the standards are in the 'mandatory' category; that is, all law enforcement agencies must comply with all applicable mandatory standards. Agencies applying for initial accreditation are expected to comply with at least 80 percent of the applicable nonmandatory standards. In addition, certain standards are designated as not applicable for agencies of a certain size. A subject index is supplied. Appendixes list members of associations and of the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies who reviewed the standards. For a related publication, see NCJ-92646.
