This volume explains the principles and practical techniques of correctional personnel supervision and is intended as a training resource for new supervisors and a reference for existing supervisors.
Abstract
The text emphasizes that supervision is a learned skill and that proper supervision sets the tone for the smooth operation of the correctional facility or program, as well as for the job satisfaction of the staff who work there. The first chapter explains different types of leadership, management, and supervisory styles and asks readers to determine what their supervisory style is. Subsequent chapters focus on the traits, skills, and principles for effective supervision; supervisory challenges such as supervising former peers and contending with difficult personalities; the administration of discipline; and techniques for responding to grievances. Additional chapters explain how to hire qualified staff, the importance of policy and procedure, and the laws that affect employer-employee relationships. Checklists, index, and 45 references
