The training of the French gendarmerie continues to reflect the civil/military dualism that is inherent in the force and the basis of its existence.
Abstract
The challenge is to match the necessary military training to the needs of the civilians who join the force and the civilians whom they will protect. Basic training is founded on military norms, while technical training is dependent upon the civilian environment. In addition to the military training, gendarmerie training concentrates more on the exercise of practical tasks where autonomy and individual initiative, even in a group situation, are encouraged. Role playing situations are practiced, management and communication skills are being taught, and student gendarmerie learning experiences with sociopsychological learning tools are being assessed. 29 notes and 4 references
