Abstract
Individual papers explain the structure and replication of HIV, current diagnostic methods, the clinical course of HIV-related disease, the epidemiology and natural history of HIV infection, and the neurobehavioral effects of HIV. Additional articles examine antibody screening programs, the relationship of psychoneuroimmunology to HIV disease, and interventions aimed at reducing HIV transmission among intravenous drug users. Further articles outline general and specific models for health education and other community interventions designed to prevent HIV transmission and explore the public health challenges that AIDS has presented to governmental policymakers, the health care system, and society at large.
