These six papers are intended to provide mental health professionals, drug treatment professionals, school personnel, administrators, and trainers with an understanding of treatment strategies for use with adolescent drug abusers who are also chronic relapsers, sexual abuse victims, compulsive gamblers, cult members, mentally ill, children of alcoholics or drug abusers, or persons with eating disorders.
Abstract
An introduction emphasizes the need for awareness of the special needs that all adolescents bring to treatment due to the many changes and developmental tasks of adolescents particularly the struggle for independence and autonomy. It also emphasizes the role of the total family structure in treatment and recovery for the adolescent. Individual articles explain methods of determining the presence of child abuse or other issues in a chemically dependent family, treatment goals, the treatment methods appropriate to different situations, and relapse prevention.
