A regional policy seminar was hosted by the Iowa Department of Education in September 1995 to provide a working forum where States could share information about existing drug and violence prevention policies, legislation, resources, success stories, and State initiatives.
Abstract
The keynote speaker at the seminar talked about the Federal Safe and Drug Free Schools Program and reported on survey findings that confirm drug use and violence among youth are at high levels. He acknowledged that drug use can be prevented and that drugs and violence represent complex problems. He stressed the need for adequate resources, technical assistance, training, educational reform, and effective drug and violence prevention programs. In addition, he addressed provisions of the Gun Free School Act and variations in State implementation of this act and the future of the Safe and Drug Free School Programs in light of budget reductions.
