The 14th annual sourcebook of criminal justice statistics compiles nationwide data on crime and criminal justice in the United States for 1986.
Abstract
The sourcebook has six sections: (1) characteristics of the criminal justice system; (2) public attitudes toward crime and criminal justice-related topics; (3) nature and distribution of known offenses; (4) characteristics and distribution of persons arrested; (5) judicial processing of defendants; and (6) persons under correctional supervision. Data are provided on the number and type of criminal justice agencies and employees, criminal justice expenditures, agency workloads, fear of victimization, death penalty, prison reform, gun control, drug use, and crime victims. Statistics also reflect offenses reported to law enforcement agencies, juveniles and adults processed through the courts, defendant characteristics and dispositions, sentences, probation and parole, and inmate characteristics and movement. Appendixes contain additional information that clarifies data presented in the sourcebook's main text.
