This article describes the abilities of the Special Operations Response Team (SORT) when dealing with dangerous situations inside correctional facilities.
Abstract
SORT is a highly trained and well-equipped tactical unit that is there to handle the most dangerous kinds of situations that can occur inside a correctional facility. When everything else fails in a dangerous situation, this team is called upon to come in and handle whatever is thrown at them. Every SORT member must be capable of gathering intelligence in a fast and accurate manner because of time and pressure. A position on SORT is one of the most popular positions in the Nebraska Department of Corrections. The competition to get in, and to pass the tests, is very hard indeed. There are two teams with seven members in each and the turnover rate is low. Applicants are drawn from all facilities and programs and the minimum requirements are that applicants have at least 1 year of experience and a minimum of 1 year of active duty on the Correctional Emergency Response Team (CERT). All applicants must undergo a complete physical assessment. They must be recommended by a superior officer to be considered for SORT and they must have no disciplinary actions against them on their records. If all that works out, the applicant is taken into the initial training and education program. Basic training happens at the SORT academy in Colorado. Team members train at least 8 hours per month on various subjects including dynamic entry, stealth movement, firearms, and defensive tactics. The Nebraska SORT was established in 1993 and has, so far, not had to deploy to any major situation inside any correctional facility in the State. All members of SORT in Nebraska have other, regular positions within the State’s Department of Corrections. SORT would get deployed in situations of hostage rescue, counter terrorism, armed and violent inmates, and support for (CERT). One of the key elements to operating a successful SORT is support from the administration. High visibility is another success factor.
