Policy recommendations for the management of school students and staff who are HIV-positive address general principles for student attendance or staff employment, procedures for evaluating students or staff with HIV, confidentiality, testing, and techniques for infection control and training for school staff in these procedures.
Abstract
The suggested general policy is that infected students attend the school and classroom to which they would be assigned if they were not infected. Likewise, infected staff should not be discriminated against in their employment. All schools should provide a sanitary environment and establish routines for handling body fluids, as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control. School administrators should consult with the physicians of those infected to determine if any safety precautions are required to ensure that disease derivatives of the HIV infection are contagious through casual contact. In the management of infected students and staff, school administrators should treat all information as highly confidential. HIV testing should not be a condition for school attendance or school employment. Resource information, 19-item bibliography.
