THIS IS A REPORT ON A COMMUNITY SUPPORTED PILOT EXPERIMENT INVOLVING A PRISON WORK RELEASE PROGRAM IN ITALY.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR DESCRIBES AND ANALYZES AN EXPERIMENTAL WORK RELEASE PROGRAM LASTING FROM 1971 TO 1974 AND INVOLVING 263 INDIVIDUALS DETAINED IN INSTITUTIONS FOR SECURITY MEASURES IN THE MODENA, ITALY AREA. UNDER THE ITALIAN LAW, SECURITY MEASURES ARE PREPARED AFTER THE TERMINATION OF REGULAR PRISON SENTENCES FOR CERTAIN TYPES (E.G., HABITUAL) OF OFFENDERS. THE EXPERIENCE, WHICH INVOLVED EITHER SEASONAL WORK FORCE OR LONGER TERM EMPLOYMENT IN LOCAL INDUSTRY, BUILDING TRADES, AND SERVICES, HAD THE SUPPORT OF LOCAL AUTHORITIES AND OF THE COMMUNITY. THE TENTATIVE CONCLUSIONS OF THE AUTHORS INDICATE POSITIVE RESULTS IN TERMS OF SOCIAL ADJUSTMENT AND LOW ESCAPE AND RECIDIVISM RATES. --IN ITALIAN
