THE TEXTS OF ELEVEN ESSAYS DEALING WITH LEGISLATIVE PROPOSALS FOR REGULATING SOCIAL RESEARCH, THE ROLE OF PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS, AND METHODOLOGICAL SOLUTIONS TO CONFLICTS BETWEEN RESEARCH, LAWS, AND ETHICS.
Abstract
PAPERS IN THIS DOCUMENT ARE THE RESULT OF A 1974 CONFERENCE ON THE CONFLICT OF SOCIAL RESEARCH WITH LAW AND ETHICS HELD IN THE UNIVERSITY OF BIELEFELD, IN THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY. THIS BOOK IS DIVIDED INTO THREE SECTIONS. THE FIRST IS AN INTRODUCTION TO THE PROBLEMS PRESENTED IN THE FORM OF A SUMMARY OF THE DISCUSSION AT BIELEFELD. THIS SUMMARY CONCLUDES BY REVIEWING THE ARGUMENTS FOR AND AGAINST GIVING RESEARCHERS A SPECIAL STATUS. IT CONTAINS A TENTATIVE PROPOSAL FOR GOVERNMENT-ESTABLISHED REVIEW PANELS THAT MIGHT CONTROL THE GIVING OF ANY SPECIAL STATUS SUCH AS IMMUNITY OR A TESTIMONIAL PRIVILEGE. NEXT, THE TEN PAPERS PREPARED FOR THE CONFERENCE ARE DIVIDED BETWEEN (1) THOSE WHICH DESCRIBE AND RAISE THE ISSUES ABOUT THE CONFLICT, IN PARTICULAR PAST GOVERNMENT ATTEMPTS TO REGULATE RESEARCH, AND (2) THOSE WHICH FOCUS ON SOLUTIONS THROUGH METHODOLOGY AND PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATIONS, AS WELL AS CONSTITUTIONAL AND LEGISLATIVE RESPONSES.
