This article reports on social science research on the problem of homelessness in the United States.
Abstract
Early research focused on the estimation of numbers of homeless people and their characteristics. Currently, ethnographic and longitudinal methods are used for planning services and management of the homeless. However, if the objective is to end homelessness in America, research must change direction and focus on the images and perceptions of the poor and homeless. Epidemiological studies will only provide information on those who are without housing, but the causes of homelessness may be related to social factors related to distribution of housing and other resources rather than on facts about the individual homeless person. In particular, research is needed on the mass media communication of the images of the homeless and into the attitudes of citizens and policy makers toward the poor and homeless. Determining reasons for the success or failure of organized advocacy of these issues is also necessary. 12 references (Author abstract modified)
