THIS TEXT ANALYZES INDIVIDUAL AND GROUP ACTIONS WHICH DEVIATE FROM THE GENERAL SOCIETAL NORM THROUGH THE USE OF THE SOCIAL-DEVIANCE APPROACH.
Abstract
THIS MODEL GENERALLY FOLLOWS THE MODEL OF THE SCIENTIFIC APPROACH, RATHER THAN THAT OF THE EARLIER VALUE COMMITMENT OR THE COMMITMENT TO DIRECTED SOCIAL CHANGE. THE MORE TRADITIONAL SOCIAL-PROBLEMS APPROACH IS APPLIED, HOWEVER, TO SOME CASES WHERE THE AUTHOR FELT IT WAS APPROPRIATE. THE CONCEPT OF SUBCULTURES, I.E. GROUPS WITH A COMMON DEVIANCE, IS DEVELOPED TO HELP IN THE ANALYSIS OF EACH SUBSTANTIVE AREA OF DEVIANCY. THE AREAS OF DEVIANCY COVERED ARE PREMARITAL AND MARITAL SEX, BIRTH CONTROL, SUICIDE, PORNOGRAPHY, ALCOHOL, DRUGS, VENEREAL DISEASE, PROSTITUTION, MALE AND FEMALE HOMOSEXUALITY, DELINQUENT SUBCULTURES, PRISONS, AND MILITANT WOMEN. EACH DEVIANCE IS STUDIED AS TO ITS MEANING, ITS HISTORICAL BACKGROUND, ITS RELATIONSHIP WITH THE REST OF SOCIETY, ITS LEGAL ASPECTS, ITS CAUSES, AND THE CONSEQUENCES AND CURES. SUBJECT AND AUTHOR INDEXES ARE INCLUDED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)...ELW
