Based on annual reports of Australian police departments, data on seven major violent and property crimes selected on the basis of frequency and seriousness are presented.
Abstract
The crimes include homicide, serious assault, robbery, breaking and entering, motor vehicle theft, fraud and forgery, and stealing. The first major section compares crime statistics between Australia and the United States, presents an international comparison of crime rates, and tabulates crime rates in selected Australian cities. Statistics on the proportion of various offenses cleared and clearance rates are also provided in the report. Results of surveys on criminal justice issues including crime victims, attitudes on crime prevention, crime seriousness and sentencing, attitudes toward police and attitudes toward domestic violence, television violence, and youthful offenders are discussed. Offender profiles are outlined; separate sections deal with drug offenses, violent deaths, and police resources and workloads. 83 tables, 26 figures, and 46 references
