Abstract
Attacks upon children are seldom violent or forceful. However, severe emotional problems can result if the incident is mishandled. Unless the attack is brutal or committed by an offender closely related to the victim, the child is able to avoid permanent consequences providing the parents treat the incident properly. Advice on how to discuss sexual abuse with children is provided. Every family should develop certain commonsense rules and precautions. A number of suggested precautions are enumerated. Further guidance addresses when to seek professional help. The principal offender in incest cases is the father. Usually incest is an ongoing situation. Behavior that might indicate an incestuous liaison is described. In the event a child is assaulted, a calming, protective air will prevent further emotional damage. If there has been physical abuse, the child should be examined by a physician. Florida law requires that all incidents of child sexual abuse be reported. Police officers who investigate such incidents have received special instruction. They understand both the victim's and the family's needs. Family support is important to all victims of sexual assault and essential for the child victims. Thirteen references are listed.
