In order to prevent sexual abuse, adolescents need to learn the differences between appropriate and inappropriate or abusive sexual contact, abuse prevention methods, and victim assistance resources available from the community.
Abstract
A course for adult leaders of teenage groups was developed by the Center for the Prevention of Sexual and Domestic Violence (Washington). The Center conducted a field test of the course on approximately 800 adolescents 12-18 years old and over 80 adult leaders and parents. Participants came from diverse racial, economic, and religious backgrounds. The course lists publications, films, and filmstrips required and suggested for group discussion of the following topics: rape, types of contact and aquaintance rape, incest, stereotypes and peer pressure, and media portrayal of women and men. Footnotes and a list of additional resources are supplied.
