Presented by trainers with many years of experience in working with juvenile and adolescent sex offenders, this training program focuses on the behaviors and cognitive distortions involved in the cycle of sexual abuse and the implications of this cycle for the treatment of adolescent and preadolescent sex offenders.
Abstract
The cycle consists of events, negative anticipation, avoidance, issues of power and control, fantasy plans, inappropriate sexual behaviors, transitory guilt, and reframing. Cognitive distortions include personalization, a victimization stance, the externalization of blame, an increased need for control, objectification, justification, reassurance, and suppression. Simplified versions of this cycle is intended for use with juveniles ages 11 and 12 and with sex offenders with intellectually handicapped youth. The trainers are current and past staff members of Redirecting Sexual Aggression, Inc., a community-based program designed specifically to assess and treat adult, adolescent, and preadolescent sex offenders. 28 recommended readings
