These 19 papers present several perspectives on the dynamics and effective prevention and treatment of child sexual abuse and the impact on victims.
Abstract
The authors represent a variety of disciplines and include adult and teenage victims of child sexual abuse. Eight of the papers were written by staff members of the Child Protection Center at Children's Hospital National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. They focus on identification and diagnosis, the reactions of the child and the family, issues related to incest, the nature and treatment of male sexual offenders, medicolegal issues, and the use of a crisis management approach for short-term intervention. Additional papers focus on the humanistic treatment of father-daughter incest, advocacy for sexually-abused children in the criminal justice system, the use of art therapy, child prostitution, child pornography, adult sexual orientation and attraction to underage persons, and strategies for prevention and protection. Appended hospital protocols, guidelines for parents, list of treatment programs, and author biographies are included.
