A literature review, interviews, and correspondence with several sex offenders formed the basis of this analysis of the nature of sex offenses and sex offenders, the primary and secondary victims, and sex offender treatment.
Abstract
An overview outlines the elements in sexual behavior, sources of standards regarding normal and deviant sexual behavior, the nature and role of the family and sexuality in history, and current sexual standards. Additional sections discuss sexual behaviors such as exhibitionism and transvestism that represent nuisance sex behaviors, sex crimes against children, homosexuality, and violent sex crimes such as lust murder and necrophilia. Rape is discussed in terms of the characteristics of rapists, the reasons it is often not reported, and the legal response to rape. Adult and child pornography are also examined in terms of the difference between pornography and obscenity, standards regarding obscenity, and research on the link between pornography and violence. Psychological victimization effects, efforts to improve victim services, types of offender treatment, and recidivism are also discussed. Tables, figures, glossary, index, and 253 references
