An inservice training program for supervisory personnel in police departments in the southern Connecticut region is presented.
Abstract
The project's two major goals were: (1) to design a unique instructional program for the training of police supervisory personnel and to field test the program, and (2) to provide training for the staff of the Division of Education and Personnel, New Haven Department of Police Service, so that they may replicate the program as needed. The program was designed to train up to 25 participants in a 40 hours-a-week period. Included are units on group behavior, leadership style, delegating and using time, and decisionmaking. Other units deal with motivation and morale, orders and directions, counseling and interviewing, and management by objectives. Each unit includes lectures and information on objectives, materials, procedures, and handouts. Suggested readings, 16mm films, and transparencies are also indicated. The primary mode of instruction is the small group interactive structure, while brief lecture-discussion sessions, film viewings, and independent work sessions are also included. The program is designed to make supervisors aware of some of the latest information available in the area of leadership behavior and aims to help them work more effectively with subordinates and superordinates. Charts and tests are included.
