Server intervention refers to a broad set of strategies for creating safer drinking environments by reducing the risk of intoxication and the risk that intoxicated patrons will harm themselves or others.
Abstract
"Dram shop liability" refers to the civil liability of those who furnish alcoholic beverages to minors or to those who are "visibly" or "obviously" intoxicated. Server intervention comprises efforts at three levels: the legal environment, the community environment, and the environment of a given licensed establishment. The Beverage Service Research and Evaluation Project emphasizes prevention; if alcohol service is performed responsibly, it should not be necessary to terminate service to customers. The primary purpose of drinking establishments is hospitality, not just selling beverage alcohol. A pilot program for server training, Techniques for Effective Alcohol Management, is designed to provide alcohol education as well as to stave off problems that can arise from alcohol-related problem behavior during sporting events. 81 references, 7 tables, and 4 figures.
