Based on data from the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts and the Federal Parole Commission, this report summarizes sentencing patterns for July 1, 1985-June 30, 1986, for Federal offenders, time served, factors that affect prison time served, and offender characteristics related to parole and probation revocations.
Abstract

Data cover sentence lengths (probation and imprisonment) for various Federal offenses. The average regular prison sentences for selected Federal offenses are shown for July 1, 1978-June 30, 1986. A table shows the average time served by adults convicted of Federal offenses having their first parole hearing between July 1, 1979, and June 30, 1980, by offense and sentence length. Data also show the time served by Federal offenders according to offense seriousness and the parole commission's risk ranking (salient factor score). The average time served following parole revocation is shown by seriousness of original offense and parole commission risk ranking. Other data indicate the number of Federal offenders leaving parole and probation supervision by basis for supervision termination, July 1, 1985-June 30, 1986. Data on offender characteristics for those whose supervision was revoked between July 1, 1982, and June 30, 1983, cover sex, race, marital status, education, criminal record, and offense. The basis for Federal offenders leaving parole and probation supervision is indicated for 1979-86. 8 tables.
