Annotation

This section describes the provisions of the Missing Children's Assistance Act, a statute enacted as a part of the Federal Comprehensive Crime Control Act of 1984.

Abstract

The new statute defines missing child and establishes several new programs under the direction of the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP), including a national toll-free telephone line for reporting information regarding the whereabouts of missing children. Additional new programs authorize grants and contracts and include a national resource center and clearinghouse to provide technical assistance to State and local governments and to coordinate private and public programs to locate missing children. Federal programs to aid missing children will be coordinated by the OJJDP administrator. The statute also establishes a nine-member Advisory Board on Missing Children, which will be responsible for approving an annual comprehensive plan to facilitate cooperation and coordination among agencies and groups responsible for locating and aiding missing children. 21 footnotes.
