Abstract
FOLLOWING A REVIEW OF TECHNIQUES FOR CRIME SCENE PRESERVATION AND THE EQUIPMENT FOR CRIME SCENE SEARCHES, ASPECTS OF THE INVESTIGATOR'S SEARCH ARE DETAILED, WITH ATTENTION TO FOOTWARE, TIRE, AND OTHER IMPRESSIONS; OUTDOOR CRIME SCENES; TOOLMARKS; TRACE EVIDENCE; AND THE SIGNIFICANCE OF A LACK OF EVIDENCE. THE SPECIFIC INVESTIGATORY PROCEDURES RELATING TO CERTAIN OFFENSES ARE DISCUSSED WITH EMPHASIS ON WHAT TO LOOK FOR, WHERE TO FIND IT, AND HOW TO PROTECT IT WITH RESPECT TO THE FOLLOWING: SUDDEN DEATHS AND HOMICIDES, SUICIDE, DEATH BY SHOOTING, ARSON, BURGLARY, DRUG CASES, SEXUAL ASSAULT, MOTOR VEHICLE SEARCHES, AND CASES INVOLVING PAPER EVIDENCE (I.E., COUNTERFEITING, THREAT AND KIDNAP NOTES, AND OTHER HANDWRITTEN, TYPED, AND PRINTED DOCUMENTS RELATING TO AN OFFENSE). TIPS ON HOW TO APPROACH THE INVESTIGATORY TASK ARE ALSO NOTED, INCLUDING THE MAINTENANCE OF AN UNBIASED, NONCOMPLACENT ATTITUDE ON THE PART OF THE INVESTIGATOR. PHOTOS ILLUSTRATE THE TEXT.
