These 13 papers examine efforts aimed at students at risk of school failure, with emphasis on the educational, social, cultural, and psychological situations that make some students likely to drop out of school and on effective policies and programs to address the needs of these students.
Abstract
The initial papers consider the range of factors that put children and youth at risk of educational failure and review educational responses to the problems of at-risk youth. The second section describes the dangers for students of a system that fails to recognize and appreciate their distinctive abilities to learn. It includes chapters that focus specifically on the cultural conflicts and historical experiences of American Indian, Hispanic, and African- American children and youth in schools. The last two sections focus on reform efforts at the school, district, and State levels and offer new models and analyses based on the most current information about the role of schools and how they may best serve students at risk.
