This paper describes the development, goals, and achievements of a juvenile court-school delinquency prevention project implemented in five Georgia counties over 20 months.
Abstract
Project staff selected the counties through a screening and needs assessment process. Each jurisdiction established a team composed of a juvenile court and school representative. The court representative was either an intake officer, probation officer, or court service worker appointed by the judge. School representatives were usually school social workers. Four workshops and onsite consultations for the teams focused on project goals: improvement in school-court relations, the development and maintenance of interagency councils, and the design and implementation of primary prevention programs. Each team devised its own means of achieving these goals in its jurisdiction. Regarding improved school-court relations, the first 20 months of the project saw most teams clarifying or modifying procedures for school referrals to juvenile court, information sharing, and communication between the two institutions. Interagency councils were revitalized or created in most jurisdictions, and the counties have made progress in developing prevention programs, including the establishment of a law-related curriculum in one school, a court-school program for high-risk youth in another school, and a youth recreational program. A chart shows the goals and accomplishments program. A chart shows the goals and accomplishments of each jurisdiction. 13 notes.
