This book exposes the professional tricks of con artists using case stories, looks at the most common schemes used against older citizens, and discusses what individuals can do to avoid being swindled.
Abstract
Although they represent only 12 percent of the population, people aged 65 and older account for 30 percent of all fraud victims. The most effective and hence most dangerous schemes against the elderly are connected to basic needs, such as health and financial security. Regulation, better law enforcement, and imprisonment play a role in preventing consumer fraud, but individuals need to be well-informed about how to avoid becoming fraud victims. The authors note questions and answers about fraud, describe the fundamentals of fraud against older adults, and include case studies. They also present a profile of the con artist, discuss the secrets of telemarketing fraud and how to fight back against fraud, and list resources available to help the elderly.
