This manual presents the gang prevention education curriculum as a project of the San Francisco Gang Prevention Program. It is composed of three components: student education, parent education, and peer facilitation.
Abstract
Thirteen lesson plans are included for teaching sixth grade students to recognize internal and external influences that encourage choosing low-risk options and behaviors over high-risk behaviors. It covers strategies that enhance self-esteem and teach assertiveness training and risk-reduction skills. The 45-minute lesson is comprised of three sections: lesson, activity such as role playing, and discussion. Each of the 13 lesson plans includes a goal, purpose, objectives, vocabulary, suggested activities, and questions. The parent education component includes participation in support groups. The use of peer facilitators is viewed as important in providing a peer role model and counteracting the gang model.
