During the next 3 years, the British Home Office will establish 20 Safer Cities projects in selected inner city areas to reduce crime, lessen the fear of crime, and create safer cities within which economic enterprise and community life can flourish.
Abstract
The program aims to bring together all sections of local communities to deter crime and create a climate of security. Safer Cities projects will reduce opportunities and temptations to commit crime by improving physical security and design. This will include fitting door and window locks to houses of the elderly and vulnerable groups and installing vandal proof fixtures and fittings. Projects will also attempt to influence crime deterrence by providing security liaison with architects, training programs for local authority staff, and crime prevention advice for community groups. To prevent juvenile delinquency, Safer Cities projects will promote opportunities for youth to experience personal and social development. This includes the promotion of sports and recreational activities and a variety of educational measures.
