This film teaches bank employees proper procedures in renting safe deposit boxes, controlling access to the vault, and coping with attempts at fraud and extortion.
Abstract
Opening scenes show glimpses of how the security of a safe deposit facility might be defeated through the direct action of professional burglars (who break in through the vault wall) to the more subtle approaches of fraudulent claims. Proper procedures in renting a box involve customer identification (requiring a proper ID and checking customer's statements) and noticing and reporting unusual behavior. The film illustrates step by step procedures to protect access to the vault, from checking the customer's ID, through the proper opening and closing of the box, to checking the coupon booth after the customer leaves. Scenes dramatizing the importance of these steps are interspersed to show how proper procedures can frustrate attempts to defraud the institution and to gain unauthorized access to a safe deposit box. The film presents problem situations that safe deposit attendants may confront, such as how to handle benign occurrences when a customer falls asleep in a coupon booth or mistakenly believes that an item is missing from the box. Other, more dangerous situations, such as an extortionist bomb threat and a blatant attempt to defraud the bank with a phony box mix-up claim are also depicted. An instructor's manual is provided.
