Abstract
AN EXAMINATION OF REPORTS TO THE CALIFORNIA STATE BUREAU OF CRIMINAL IDENTIFICATION AND INVESTIGATION REVEALS AN INCIDENCE OF 401 SAFE BURGLARIES DURING A TWO-MONTH PERIOD. A SUMMARY OF FINDINGS IS PLACED AT THE BEGINNING OF THE REPORT. SAMPLE FINDINGS INDICATE THAT BURGLARY OCCURS ON AN AVERAGE OF 44.5 TIMES PER WEEK, GENERALLY AT NIGHT AND ON WEEKENDS, AT RESTAURANTS, SERVICE STATIONS AND SCHOOLS, ON CLOSED AND UNOCCUPIED PREMISES WITHOUT ALARMS, AND BY MEANS OF FORCED DOORS AND WINDOWS. UPRIGHT AND FLOOR SAFES WERE THE MOST FREQUENT TARGET, TWO-THIRDS OF THE ATTEMPTS BEING SUCCESSFUL AND CONDUCTED BY THE RIP-PRY-PEEL METHOD USING BURGLARBROUGHT TOOLS. MEDIAN CASH LOSS WAS $455 WITH GREATEST LOSSES SUFFERED FROM HOMES. ADDITIONAL FINDINGS AND DATA TABLES SUPPLEMENT THE REPORT.
