The Royal Canadian Mounted Police, created in 1873 in the North-West territory, is the most important federal police force in Canada today.
Abstract
The name change in 1920 was meant to emphasize the change from a local law enforcement organization to a federal force. The article reviews the historical development, function, mandates, and activities of the force from the establishment of the North- West Mounted Police in 1920 to the present-day community- policing, as opposed to military, emphasis of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. 13 notes
