A sample of 50 male patients at a California 28-day Minnesota Model recovery program from chemical dependency completed a self-report questionnaire that focused on the role of spirituality in their treatment and recovery.
Abstract
Followup questionnaires were sent to all subjects 6 months after discharge from the treatment program, and a corroboratory questionnaire was obtained from a family member of each subject. The results showed that many of those subjects abstaining from drug addiction used prayer and meditation on a regular basis, compared to abusers who had relapsed and resumed their substance abuse. Although there was no clear evidence of causation, the results suggested an association between recovery and the use of prayer and mediation as a measure of spirituality. Prayer and meditation comprise an integral part of the 12-step philosophy. 8 references
